Rotary Doesn't Do Anything; Rotarians Do!
Last week, Nina Gammons, our Assistant District Director from the Ontario Club, introduced Gene Hoge, District 5400 Director and his wife SueAnn. Gene is making the rounds to visit all 41 clubs in his district. Gene, a recently retired dentist, lives in Pocatello and has been a Rotarian for more than 25 years. He is excited to be our District's representative among the world's 33,000 clubs, 1.2 million Rotarians in 200 countries.
Gene spoke about the work of Rotary internationally, particularly the contributions that the Rotary Foundation has made in the areas of clean water, food production, literacy, micro-credit and health care. A push this year will be to finally eradicate polio. Our individual contributions to the Rotary foundation are critical this year in order to match the $100 million give by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
President Bob presented Gene with his check for $100 towards the "President's Project" These funds will ultimately be matched by the District and the Foundation and will expand to $14,000 to be used to help fund the dental clinic that Gene wants to build in Quito, Ecuador.
Gene challenged us to increase our membership (specifically, we need more women, because they get things done!). After hearing of all the projects our club does and the difference we make to the lives of folks in Gem County, he was really impressed! Using the analogy of the Olympics, he said "we've made the semi-finals"! His final message? "Spread the light of Rotary and make the world a better place".
