Tale of Two Boxes
Last week we learned about two Rotary International programs that most of us were not familiar with - ShelterBox and AquaBox. Both humanitarian programs were originated in England over the last ten years or so. A ShelterBox, which weighs about 110 pounds, contains a ten person tent, cooking supplies, water purification supplies, blankets, etc. Each box costs about $750! Since its inception, the program has shipped thousands of boxes to 57 countries around the world. Most recently, they shipped 8000 boxes to Haiti. All this thanks to a Rotarian by the name of Tom Henderson of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall. (If you'd like to know more, check out YouTube for some great videos)
An AquaBox is a large plastic tub which contains the essentials to easily restore safe drinking water after a disaster to prevent or minimize the outbreak of disease. Based on a simple filtering system with purification tablets, the unit can supply a family of four with ten glasses of water per person per day for 4 months! So far, AquaBox has shipped 90,000 of these boxes around the world!
